The Spring Edit: What to Refresh and What to Leave Alone

There’s something about spring that makes everything feel a little lighter. After months of cozy layers and winter routines, spring is usually the time I start noticing what feels too heavy, too cluttered, or just not needed anymore. It’s less about redecorating and more about making small, simple swaps.

Lightening The Layers

Removing heavier blankets is a start to making things feel lighter as you transition to spring.  Blankets have been great all winter, but once the weather starts warming up, they just feel like too much. I swap them for lighter throws, switch out my hand towels and even pillows to create a lighter, spring feel.

Coffee Table & Shelf Changes

Coffee tables and shelves can get cluttered so quickly. Spring is a good time to reset. I usually take everything off and only put back a few things I really like or actually use. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just simpler and easier to keep up with.

Lighter Scents

Another edit I make when the weather changes is swapping out the thick scented candles and replacing them with lighter scents. Winter scents tend to be stronger and a little heavier. In the spring, I like to switch to something lighter like clean, fresh, maybe a little citrus or floral and something with bright or lighter colors.

Spring Home Edit: What to Change

  • Swap heavy blankets and throws for lighter fabrics like cotton or linen

  • Put away dark, moody pillows and bring in lighter or softer tones

  • Change out candles to fresh, clean scents (citrus, floral, green)

  • Clear off and simplify coffee tables, shelves, and countertops

  • Rotate in a few seasonal pieces instead of over-decorating

  • Add something natural—fresh flowers, branches, or greenery

  • Lighten up bedding with breathable layers and simple textures

  • Store or donate decor you didn’t use or love last year

  • Clean out baskets, trays, and catch-all spaces that collect clutter

  • Wash or swap pillow covers, throws, and slipcovers

Closet Cleaning 101

I try to think about decor the same way I do clothes. If I didn’t use it last year or forgot I even had it, it’s probably time to let it go. You don’t need to keep everything. Donate it, store it, or pass it along, whatever makes sense. Adding a mirror, organization bins or cute hangers can help create space.
